The natural beauty of Hancock County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. The Ellsworth Falls to Ellsworth stretch of Union River in Hancock County is 0.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Maine are often more forgiving than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of places for that. Lodging
is available near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This
section is very short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people.
Briefly about the general area: Taking a little journey to close by Black Point is a wonderful idea; if you want to hit the beach, Jesse Beach is in the vicinity. Hales Beach is next to Union River if you're in a beach type of mood. Summertime highs at Union River regularly tend to be in the 70's. For the period of the moonlight hours it's ordinarily in the 50's. Through
the wintertime this place gets highs in the 20's with temperatures at Union River dipping down into the 0's through winter nights. The yearly precipitation here at Union River is about average; of all the months in a year November is the one with the most rain, and February is when it's the driest.
