Maine whitewater - Wild River, White Mountains, Oxford County Oxford county, Hastings to Gilead section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-IV     3 miles   The nature scenery of Maine and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good spots for that around here. This is a somewhat short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. Wild River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Hastings to Gilead stretch is the only one. The Hastings to Gilead stretch of Wild River is 3 miles long and is a class II-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Whitewater     paddling here in the White Mountains is a great experience. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Maine is often easier than elsewhere, so better not forget that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. Briefly about the general area: The yearly rainfall here at Wild River is about average; throughout August this area sees the most rain, and February meanwhile is the driest month. Having a glorious time in the White Mountains is trouble-free. Going for a hike on the Roost Trail is always a   fine adventure. Summertime highs at Wild River regularly tend to be in the 70's, and through summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 20's while the cold winter nights at Wild River are in the 0's. There is a tremendous hiking trail next to Wild River called the Hastings Trail, and Carlton Notch is another glorious place to stop by nearby.
