CLASS V 1.4 miles
The Dam to Youghiogheny River stretch of Deep Creek in Maryland is 1.4 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class V section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Maryland are easier than the national norm, so you'd better keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, and if you make reservations in advance
you're all set. This is an extremely short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This is the only paddling stretch along Deep Creek. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either
way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. The natural beauty of Garrett County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle.
Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the sky makes Deep Creek a wet location; July is when you get the most rain here, and the driest of the months is February. Muddy Creek Falls is an inspiring location to visit during your stay. All through the summertime months at Deep Creek highs are mostly in the 80's;
all through summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. Through the winter highs are mostly in the 30's with temperatures at Deep Creek dipping down into the 10's during winter nights. A short journey to Lower Swallow Falls is always worthwhile; a day on the slopes of Wisp is just what you need.
