Maryland whitewater - Gunpowder Falls, Baltimore County
Baltimore
county,
Falls Road to Phoenix section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-II 15 miles
This is a very forgiving and beautiful stretch of river; however, there are a number of strainers to negotiate. One thing, though, I have lived in MD for decades and NEVER seen a poisonous snake, not like I have out west or down south, and the VERY first outing on this stretch had us come across two copperheads within a half hour of each other, with the second sunning itself on the very strainer we had to pull the boats across and climb over ourselves. Other than that, add a couple of hours to any suggested trip durations, if the water is lower. Says

The average Maryland whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so pack your camping stuff. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while
will have you coming back for more. This river system is full of great paddling sections, the Falls Road to Phoenix section is just one of them. The nature scenery of Maryland and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything.
