The wonderful Maryland scenery and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The Catoctin Hollow Road to Frank Bentz Lake stretch of Hunting Creek is 2.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV+(V) section. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The starting location is a short drive from Gettysburg,
if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state
are quite easy. This is a pretty short section so no need to bring snacks. This is the only paddling stretch along Hunting Creek. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling places.
Briefly about the general area: For the duration of the summertime at Hunting Creek highs are typically in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 60's. Through the winter this place gets highs in the 30's, and winter nights come with lows in the 10's to Hunting Creek.
The sights at Catoctin Mountain Park will blow your mind, and nearby you hit upon the Cunningham Falls Nature Trail which is a tremendous hiking trail. A cool spot to explore next to Hunting Creek is Wolf Rock, and going for a hike on the High Rock Nature Trail is always a
great adventure. This is such a wonderful river. Hunting Creek is a good place of typical rainfall; the month with most of the rain is May, and February is the month with the least moisture.
