Maryland whitewater - Hunting Creek, Fredrick County Fredrick county, Catoctin Hollow Road to Frank Bentz Lake section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS III-IV+(V)     2.5 miles   This section of Hunting Creek in Fredrick County is 2.5 miles long and is a class III-IV+(V) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The put-in is not too far from Gettysburg, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. No need to look hard for hotels, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Since you're     on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. There are no other stretches to paddle along Hunting Creek than the Catoctin Hollow Road to Frank Bentz Lake stretch. This is a short paddling stretch so better bring some good walking shoes. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The natural beauty of Maryland and the water flowing gracefully down Hunting Creek will make you feel great. Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at Hunting Creek commonly tend to be in the 80's, and during summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 30's with temperatures at Hunting Creek dipping down into the 10's through winter nights. A journey to Catoctin Mountain Park is worthwhile, and   Hunting Creek is right by the Cunningham Falls Nature Trail. A normal amount of precipitation falls here at Hunting Creek; during May this area sees the most rain; February is the month with the least moisture. Interesting geology is available here; Wolf Rock is in close proximity to Hunting Creek; hiking along the High Rock Nature Trail is pleasant fun. This is such a wonderful river.
