Maryland whitewater - Patuxent River, Howard County Howard county, Carroll Mill Road to Savage Mill section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II(IV)     15.3 miles   The Carroll Mill Road to Savage Mill stretch of Patuxent River in Howard County is 15.3 miles long and is a class I-II(IV) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The wonderful Maryland scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places. Lodging is available near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will     make you glad you came. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your sleeping bag. The put-in location is a short drive from Baltimore-Towson, as you can see on the road map further down. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Maryland are often easier than in other states, so better not forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. Patuxent River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Carroll Mill Road to Savage Mill stretch is the only one. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Briefly about the general area: For the period of the summer months, highs typically are in the 80's at Patuxent River while nighttime lows are ordinarily in the 60's. All through the winter the highs are commonly in the 40's with winter   lows in the 20's overnight here at Patuxent River. All the water falling down from the sky makes Patuxent River a wet place; May is the wettest month with most rain; January is when it's the driest. Symphony Woods is a magnificent local forest.
