Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Maryland tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The Sandy Hook to Point of Rocks stretch of Potomac River in Maryland is 13.5 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. Lodging is available near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might
end up sleeping in your car. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. The put-in is not too far from Hagerstown-Martinsburg, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road
map further down the page. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so pack your camp stove. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. The Sandy Hook to Point of Rocks stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.

Through the warmest time of the year at Potomac River highs are usually in the 80's. Once the sun is down it dips down to the 60's. Highs during the winter are typically in the 30's while Potomac River nighttime low temperatures through the wintertime are in the 20's.
