The average Maryland whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so keep in mind that rivers here are less demanding. The put-in is not too far from Hagerstown-Martinsburg, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of spots for that. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river
for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. No need to look hard for hotels, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your camp stove. And of course, there are campgrounds
nearby. The beautiful scenery of Maryland and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. This stretch of Potomac River in Maryland is 13.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section.
Briefly about the general area: The warmest time of the year at Potomac River arrives with high temperatures in the 80's, and throughout the night it cools down to the 60's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 30's, and during the dark hours in the winter at Potomac River temperatures plunge
to the 20's. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a magnificent hiking trail near Potomac River. Potomac River is a good location of common rainfall; of all the months in a year May is the one with the most rain, and the driest of the months is January.
