The Violette's Lock - GW Canal Loop section of Potomac River in Maryland     is 4 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This river system is full of great paddling sections, the Violette's Lock - GW Canal Loop section is just one of them. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. Briefly about the general area: There is a great hiking trail near Potomac River called the Paw Paw Passage Trail. Taking a little visit to close by Blockhouse Point is a glorious idea, and nearby you stumble on the Meadow   Trail which is a fine hiking trail. At Potomac River through the warm months highs are in the 80's. Summer night lows descend down to the 60's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 40's, and winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Potomac River. Potomac River is a wet place that gets much rain; May is when you get the most rain here, and February on the other hand is the driest.
