Maryland whitewater - Potomac River, Montgomery County Montgomery county, Violette's Lock - GW Canal Loop section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     4 miles   This stretch of Potomac River in Montgomery County is 4 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-II section of whitewater. The nature scenery of Maryland and the cool fresh water have people coming here. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This stretch has has enough mileage, suitable for an afternoon trip. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots     of paddling spots. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Maryland you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so don't forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Briefly about the general area: For the period of the warm days of summer at Potomac River highs are typically in the 80's, and the nighttime is fairly chillier of course, generally in the 60's. All through the winter highs are in the 40's; winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Potomac River. Potomac River sees pretty high levels of rain; the month of May is the wettest   with most of the rain, and February is the month with the least moisture. Near Potomac River you hit upon the Paw Paw Passage Trail which is a wonderful hiking trail, and if you're here, do take a tour to Blockhouse Point.
