Montgomery
county,
Through Great Falls section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS V+ 0.6 miles
The wonderful Montgomery County scenery and the playfulness of the water beats anything. The starting location is a short drive from Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This stretch of Potomac River in Maryland is 0.6 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class V+ section of whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Maryland is often easier than elsewhere, so keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging
is available very near the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. This is a very short
section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. The Through Great Falls stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of rivers for that.
Briefly about the general area: Why not take a refreshing hike along the Potomac Heritage Trail; The Spout is a pleasant local attraction. From a precipitation point of view Potomac River is a rather common location; most of the rain falls throughout May, and February meanwhile is
the driest month. Summertime brings highs in the 80's to Potomac River with overnight lows in the 60's. For the duration of the wintertime the highs are ordinarily in the 30's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Potomac River. Potomac River is right by the Gold Mine
Trail, and Great Falls is a lovely site to stop by while you're at Potomac River. This river is so good. If you're here, you might as well take a look at Mather Gorge; a tour to Wolf Trap Farm Park is recommended.
