This stretch of Potomac River is 0.6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class V+ section. The wonderful Montgomery County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The starting point is not too far from Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so you'd better keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding.
There's camping available near Potomac River. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Through Great Falls stretch is just one of them. This is a very short stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. No shortage of good
hotels, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near.
Briefly about the general area: During the summertime months at Potomac River temperatures are ordinarily in the 80's. Summer night lows fall down to the 60's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 30's, and after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at Potomac River fall into the 20's. Don't leave Potomac River without first paying a visit to The Spout,
and you can go for a hike on the Gold Mine Trail. Coming to this river is always a good idea. Mather Gorge is a pleasant place to spend some time at; there are glorious places to look at along the Potomac Heritage Trail. If time allows, Wolf Trap Farm Park is a national park
worth checking out It's always fine to stop at Great Falls. A normal amount of rainfall falls here at Potomac River; through the month of May you get the most rain around here while February is usually the driest month.
