The Mather Gorge to Lock 10 section of Potomac River in Maryland is 6.5 miles long and is a class I-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so better not forget that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. The natural beauty of Montgomery County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Mather Gorge to Lock 10 stretch is just one of many. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots.
If you're coming from Washington-Arlington-Alexandria it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.
Briefly about the general area: Put some time aside to spend at Calico Rapids since you're here at Potomac River, and don't leave Potomac River without first going for a hike along the Gold Mine Trail. A trip to Great Falls Park is worthwhile;
good hiking is available along the Potomac Heritage Trail. Potomac River gets a common amount of rainfall; through May this area sees the most rain; the driest month of the year is February. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Potomac River. All through
the dark hours of summer temperatures fall down into the 60's. During the winter highs are mostly in the 30's, and nighttime lows in the 20's for Potomac River. This river is so good. While staying at Potomac River you could always look at Mather Gorge, and Yellow Falls is always fun to check out.
