The starting location is a reasonable drive from Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This stretch of Potomac River is 6.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-IV section. The beautiful scenery of Montgomery County and the water flowing gracefully down Potomac River will make you feel great. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. The campgrounds here at
Potomac River are pretty good. The average Maryland whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. This stretch is mid length, suitable for an afternoon trip.
There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. There are many good hotels to choose from, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
Briefly about the general area: At this river you will never have a bad time. A short journey to Calico Rapids is always worthwhile, and you can have a great hiking adventure along the Potomac Heritage Trail. Summertime highs at Potomac River usually tend to be
in the 80's; the overnight is slightly chillier of course, regularly in the 60's. The winter comes with highs in the 30's with temperatures at Potomac River dipping down into the 20's through winter nights. Mather Gorge is a tremendous location to spend some time at, and do
take a hike on the Gold Mine Trail. Great Falls Park is a great site near Potomac River, and Yellow Falls is an inspiring place to take a look at while you're here. The yearly rainfall here at Potomac River is about average; of all the months in a year May is the one with the most rain; the driest of the months is February.
