  The put-in is not too far from Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Maryland is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. There's camping available near Potomac River. The nature scenery of Maryland
    and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. The Mather Gorge to Lock 10 section of Potomac River is 6.5 miles long and is according to American
Whitewater a class I-IV section of whitewater. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's good length for a morning trip.

Briefly about the general area:
At this river you will never have a bad time. A visit to Yellow Falls will fill your soul with great feelings; don't leave Potomac River without first paying a visit to Calico Rapids. For the period of the long summer days here at Potomac River, high temperatures commonly get into the 80's. During the dark hours of summer temperatures drop down into the 60's. High temperatures through the winter
 
are normally in the 30's while Potomac River overnight low temperatures through the wintertime are in the 20's.
There's nice hiking along the Potomac Heritage Trail, and dropping by Great Falls Park is just something you need to do if you haven't yet. An average amount of rainfall falls at Potomac River; May is the month that gets the most rain, and February is when it's the driest.
Don't leave Potomac River without first going for a hike along the Gold Mine Trail, and Potomac River is near Mather Gorge which is without doubt worth visiting.
