Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Maryland is often easier than elsewhere, so keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. The nature scenery of DC County and the water flowing gracefully down Rock Creek are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The Military Road to Potomac River in D. stretch of Rock Creek is 4 miles long and it is classified as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling places. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, as you can see on the road map further down. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors
will have you coming back for more. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. This stretch is mid length, suitable for an afternoon trip. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.
Briefly about the general area: Rock Creek gets a normal amount of yearly rainfall; most of the rain falls through May, and February meanwhile is the driest month. Through the warm days of summer at Rock Creek temperatures are regularly in the 80's with overnight lows in the 60's. For the
period of the winter highs are in the 40's, and all through the dark hours in the wintertime at Rock Creek temperatures sink to the 20's. If you come to this river you will have a good time for sure. Since you're here at Rock Creek why not stop by Klingle Valley, and there
is a great hiking trail nearby called the Western Ridge Trail. A day at Bathing Beach in close proximity to Rock Creek is time well spent, and on a perfect day you can take a hike along the Rock Creek Park Bike Trail. Glen Echo Park is one of the destinations right next door to Rock Creek that are magnificent to go to, and a journey to Jumpin' Jack Spring will fill your soul with good feelings.
