If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Maryland you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. This section of Wills Creek is 6.1 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. Lodging is available near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. The nature scenery of Allegany County and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it
on an afternoon. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. The starting location is a short drive from Cumberland, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that.
Briefly about the general area: For the duration of the long summer days highs here at Wills Creek get into the 80's with nighttime lows in the 50's. The winter comes with highs in the 30's with temperatures at Wills Creek dipping down into the 10's during
winter nights. If you want to visit some attention-grabbing stuff, visit Lovers Leap; since you're here, you might as well pop by The Narrows. Big Blue Spring is a striking location to pop by while you're at Wills Creek. The annual precipitation here at Wills Creek is about average; the month of July is the wettest with most of the rain; the driest month is February.
