The Route 2 hairpin turn to Deerfield River section of Cold River is 4.25 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-IV section of whitewater. The put-in location is a short drive from Bennington, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Massachusetts is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are less demanding.
You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The Route 2 hairpin turn to Deerfield River section is the only paddling section along Cold River. For all
you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip.
Briefly about the general area: Going for a hike on the Dunbar Brook Trail is always a delightful adventure, and the slopes of Berkshire East are so inviting nobody can resist. Through the warmest time of the year, highs frequently are in the 70's at Cold River. When the night sets
in temperatures fall down into the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 20's while the cold winter nights at Cold River are in the 10's. Cold River is a good place of common precipitation; August is the month that gets the most rain, and February is when it's the driest.
