There is a portage around the #2 dam which is about a mile or so below the Wilcox Hollow put in. The portage includes an 800 foot long carry and a scramble down a steep, rocky slope. Says Brewbeer
The put-in is not too far from Springfield, as you can see on the road map further down. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. This stretch of Deerfield River is 7
miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. The natural beauty of Franklin County and the cool fresh water beats anything. There are many good hotels to choose from, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. And of course,
there are campgrounds nearby. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's perfect for a one day trip. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Wilcox Hollow to Stillwater Bridge stretch is just one of them.
Briefly about the general area: Some delightful nature is available in South River State Forest, and Greenfield Beach is a picturesque beach to have a look at. Summertime highs at Deerfield River mostly tend to
be in the 70's. For the duration of the moonlight hours it's commonly in the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 20's; overnight lows at Deerfield River through the wintertime ordinarily sink into the 0's. A good deal of rainfall falls at Deerfield River; most of the rain falls during November, and February is when it's the driest.
