There is a portage around the #2 dam which is about a mile or so below the Wilcox Hollow put in. The portage includes an 800 foot long carry and a scramble down a steep, rocky slope. Says Brewbeer

Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Massachusetts are easier than the national norm, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding.
The Wilcox Hollow to Stillwater Bridge stretch of Deerfield River is 7 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. There are nice comfortable hotels here,
and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good places. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. On this section you do get some distance, it's good length for a morning trip. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.

Greenfield Beach. The high level of precipitation makes Deerfield River a rather wet location; November is the month that gets the most rain, and February meanwhile is the driest month. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 70's to Deerfield River. All through the
moonlight hours it's usually in the 50's. For the period of the winter highs are mostly in the 20's; nighttime lows at Deerfield River during the wintertime usually sink into the 0's.
