Massachusetts whitewater - Deerfield River, Franklin County Franklin county, Wilcox Hollow to Stillwater Bridge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     7 miles   There is a portage around the #2 dam which is about a mile or so below the Wilcox Hollow put in. The portage includes an 800 foot long carry and a scramble down a steep, rocky slope. Says Brewbeer If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. The wonderful Massachusetts scenery and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. This stretch of Deerfield River in Franklin County is 7 miles long     and has been rated as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. The put-in is not too far from Springfield, as you can see on the road map further down. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, good for a one day paddling trip. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Lodging is available near the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Wilcox Hollow to Stillwater Bridge stretch is just one of them. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. Briefly about the general area: There's a forest here at Deerfield River   called South River State Forest, and Greenfield Beach is a beach nearby that you can explore. Deerfield River is a wet spot that gets a large amount of precipitation; of all the months in a year November is the one with the most rain, and February is when it's the driest. During the summer months here at Deerfield River, high temperatures commonly reach the 70's. During the dark hours of summer temperatures descend down into the 50's. Throughout the winter this place gets highs in the 20's while Deerfield River nighttime low temperatures through the wintertime are in the 0's.
