The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Massachusetts are often easier than in other states, so better not forget that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. The natural beauty of Massachusetts and the water flowing gracefully down Green River beats anything. If you're coming from Pittsfield it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The US Route 7 to Hoosic River section of Green River is 8.15 miles long and is according to American Whitewater
a class II-III section of whitewater. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling rivers. For all you camping people there
are campgrounds nearby. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip. Green River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the US Route 7 to Hoosic River stretch is the only one. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here.
Briefly about the general area: For the duration of the warm days of summer at Green River temperatures are generally in the 70's while nighttime lows are commonly in the 50's. The winter comes with highs in the 20's with temperatures at Green River dipping
down into the 10's all through winter nights. Really good skiing awaits you at Mount Greylock Ski Club, and hiking is a popular thing to do around Green River; Hopper Trail is a pleasant local trail. This river is a wonderful place to visit. Westlawn Cemetery is in close proximity
and always good to have a look at, and the Deer Hill Trail offers hiking at its best. The amount of precipitation that falls at Green River is close to the national average; most of the rain falls through August while February is usually the driest month.
