If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Massachusetts you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so keep in mind that rivers here are less demanding. This section of North River in Franklin County is 7 miles long and is a class II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for
a while will have you coming back for more. The campgrounds here at North River are pretty good. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. There are no other stretches to paddle along North River than
the Halifax Vermont Gorge to Colrain stretch. The starting point is not too far from Springfield, as you can see on the road map further down.
Briefly about the general area: For the duration of the days of summer, highs ordinarily are in the 70's at North River, and the nighttime is a little cooler of course, frequently in the 50's. Highs during the winter are regularly in the 20's; night lows during the wintertime for North River tend to be in the 0's. North River frequently gets a great deal of rain; through November this area sees the most rain, and February is when it's the driest.
