The starting location is a short drive from Springfield, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The scenic beauty of Hampden County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Massachusetts are often easier than in other states, so better not forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night,
but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This stretch of Westfield River in Hampden County is 4 miles long and
has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more.
Briefly about the general area: The high level of rain makes Westfield River a relatively wet place; of all the months in a year August is the one with the most rain, and the driest month is January. High temperatures at Westfield River during the months of summer are in the 80's, and throughout summer
nights temperatures are in the 50's. During the winter this place gets highs in the 30's, and nighttime lows through the wintertime for Westfield River tend to be in the 0's. While you're here at Westfield River you can take a hike along the Link Trail, and don't leave Westfield
River without first checking out Turtle Bend. This is a really good river. Going for a hike along the Richard Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this vicinity, and Blandford is a very popular ski area close by.
