The wonderful Michigan scenery and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. There are no other stretches to paddle along Bear River than the Petoskey stretch. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a pretty small number of paddling spots. This section is very short so no need to bring snacks. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Lodging is available near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This stretch of Bear
River in Emmet County is 1 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more.
Briefly about the general area: If you like skiing, you're in
luck; Boyne Highlands is near Bear River. Summertime brings highs in the 70's to Bear River, and the nighttime is a little cooler of course, frequently in the 50's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 20's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Bear River. The yearly rainfall here at Bear River is about average; September is when you get the most rain here, and February is the month with the least moisture.
