The White Pine to Silver City section of Big Iron River in Ontonagon County is 4.3 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people. The beautiful scenery of Michigan and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. The average Michigan whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so better not forget that rivers here are less demanding.
This stretch is mid length, you can easily run it on an afternoon. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds
nearby. Big Iron River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the White Pine to Silver City section is the only one. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. The river winds through the Gogebic Range and you get great scenery.
Briefly about the general area: Porcupine Mountain is a brilliant local ski area, and Bonanza Falls is always fun to check out. That right there is a load of entertaining stuff already but it goes on, the Gogebic Range has it all. Pewabeck
