The natural beauty of Michigan and the playfulness of the water beats anything. This stretch of Big Iron River is 4.3 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Michigan are often easier than in other states, so better not forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The campgrounds here at Big Iron River are pretty good. There are no other stretches to paddle along Big Iron River than the White Pine to Silver City stretch. A bit of exercise and
spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's perfect for a one day trip. Whitewater paddling here in the Gogebic Range is a great experience. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have
to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good places.
Briefly about the general area: The beauty of mother nature reveals herself at Pewabeck Falls, and if you like skiing, you're in luck; Porcupine Mountain is rather near. The annual rainfall here at Big Iron River is about average; through August this area sees the most rain; the driest month of the year is February.
Summer brings highs in the 70's to Big Iron River. During the moonlight hours it's typically in the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 10's while the cold winter nights at Big Iron River are in the-10's. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Gogebic Range. Don't leave Big Iron River without first paying a visit to Bonanza Falls.
