The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The Gwinn to River Road stretch of Escanaba River in Michigan is 19 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing
to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. There's camping available near Escanaba River. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Gwinn to River Road section is just one of many. The starting location
is a short drive from Marquette, as you can see on the road map further down. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff.
