The scenic beauty of Michigan and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This section of Ontonagon River in Michigan is 9.7 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II(IV) section. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors
are great reasons to come. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The campgrounds here at Ontonagon River are pretty good. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t
have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The river winds through the Gogebic Range and you get great scenery. The Thayer Road to FS Road 178 stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system.
