If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Michigan you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The put-in location is a short drive from Houghton, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the Arvon quarry to Quartzite Falls section is one of them. The scenic beauty of Michigan and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. No matter if you're whitewater
rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. This is a short paddling stretch so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Great exercise and just being out on the
river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
Briefly about the general area: At Slate River throughout the long summer days highs are in the 70's, and the overnight is fairly cooler of course, regularly in the 50's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 20's while Slate River nighttime low temperatures through the winter are in the 0's. Slate River is a good place of normal
rain; of all the months in a year January is the one with the most snow while April is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
