  Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. The beautiful scenery of Baraga County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Arvon quarry to Quartzite Falls section is one of them. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better
    reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This section is quite short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. The Arvon quarry to Quartzite Falls section of Slate River in Michigan is 2.5 miles long and is a class II-III+ section of whitewater according
to American Whitewater. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. If you're coming from Houghton it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that.

Briefly about the general area:
The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 70's to Slate River. All through the moonlight hours it's generally in the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 20's while the cold winter nights at Slate River are in the 0's. Slate River gets a normal amount of yearly rainfall; January is the month that gets the most snow, and April is the month with the least moisture.
