If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Michigan you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so better not forget that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. The Arvon quarry to Quartzite Falls section of Slate River is 2.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III+ section of whitewater. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The starting point is not too far from Houghton, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This is a bit of a short stretch
so better bring some good walking shoes. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The scenic beauty of Michigan and the beautiful way the water current
moves down the stream attract people from near and far. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Arvon quarry to Quartzite Falls section is one of them. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here.
