This section of Sturgeon River in Michigan is 6.8 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-IV section of whitewater. The wonderful Michigan scenery and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The put-in is not
too far from Houghton, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. The Plains Road to Sturgeon Gorge Road stretch is one of many paddling
stretches in this river system. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it on an afternoon.
Briefly about the general area: Put some time aside to spend at Tibbets Falls while you're here at Sturgeon River. The yearly precipitation here at Sturgeon River is about average; most of the rain falls through August while February is the month with the least amount of precipitation. High temperatures at Sturgeon River during the summer are in the 80's, and through the night it cools down to the 50's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 20's, and during the dark hours in the winter at Sturgeon River temperatures descend to the 0's.
