The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Houghton, as you can see on the road map further down. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The natural beauty of Baraga County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. The Plains Road to Sturgeon Gorge Road stretch of Sturgeon River in Michigan is 6.8 miles long
and it is classified as a class I-IV section by American Whitewater. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area
has a large number of paddling spots. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Plains Road to Sturgeon Gorge Road stretch is just one of them.
Briefly about the general area: Tibbets Falls is always fun to check out. Sturgeon River gets a common amount of yearly rain; August is the month that gets the most rain, and February meanwhile is the driest month. All through the warmest time of the year at Sturgeon River temperatures are frequently in the 80's. Summer overnight lows sink down to the 50's. For the duration of the wintertime the highs are generally in the 20's with winter lows in the 0's overnight here at Sturgeon River.
