Michigan whitewater - Tioga River, Baraga County Baraga county, Highway 41 to Sturgeon River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-IV     2.2 miles   Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Michigan is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. The natural beauty of Michigan and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.     This is a pretty short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. The starting point is not too far from Houghton, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. The Highway 41 to Sturgeon River section is the only paddling section along Tioga River. The campgrounds here at Tioga River are pretty good. This stretch of Tioga River is 2.2 miles long and it is classified as a class II-IV section by American Whitewater. Briefly about the general area: At Tioga River through the warm months highs are in the 70's while overnight lows are ordinarily in the 50's. High temperatures during the wintertime are normally in the 20's, and after the sun is down through the wintertime temperatures at Tioga River   drop into the 0's. Tioga River gets a typical amount of rain; through the month of September you get the most rain around here, and the driest month is February.
