I've paddled from Katherine Lake to the St. Louis River and there is plenty of river to paddle besides the section from US 53 to US 2. The top section, from Katherine Lake to Lake Co #2 is an especially wild ride, and I've only done it once, but the drop is incredible, sometimes like a logging flume. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Minnesota is often more difficult than elsewhere, so     you'd better keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. If you're coming from Duluth it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. There are no other stretches to paddle along Cloquet River than the US Route 53 to US Route 2 stretch. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your camp stove. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Briefly about the general area: During the warm days of summer at Cloquet River highs are regularly in the 70's. When the night sets in temperatures plunge down into the 50's. High temperatures through the wintertime are normally in the 10's while Cloquet River overnight low temperatures through the wintertime are in the-10's. Not much rain falls here at Cloquet River; most of the rain falls through June, and February is the month with the least moisture.
