Minnesota whitewater - Cloquet River, St. Louis County St. Louis county, US Route 53 to US Route 2 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     11 miles   The river is at least 100 miles long.  I've paddled from Katherine Lake to the St. Louis River and there is plenty of river to paddle besides the section from US 53 to US 2.  The top section, from Katherine Lake to Lake Co #2 is an especially wild ride, and I've only done it once, but the drop is incredible, sometimes like a logging flume. Says Pierre G This stretch of Cloquet River in Minnesota is 11 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. The natural beauty of Minnesota and the sparkling of the sunlight on     the water have people coming here. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Duluth, as you can see on the road map further down. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so why not pack your camp stove too. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The campgrounds here at Cloquet River are pretty good. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with not   too many other spots for that. Briefly about the general area: Cloquet River gets very little rainfall; June is when you get the most rain here, and the driest month of the year is February. Through the summertime, highs commonly are in the 70's at Cloquet River, and through the night it cools down to the 50's. Highs through the wintertime are mostly in the 10's, and overnight lows in the-10's for Cloquet River.
