CLASS I-III+     7 miles
  The beautiful scenery of Cook County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. The Poplar Creek Road to Highway 61 stretch of Pigeon River is 7 miles long and is a class I-III+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. There arenít
    any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The Poplar Creek Road to Highway 61 section is one of a few paddling sections
in this river system. The starting point is not too far from Houghton, as you can see on the road map further down. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you won't find many other paddling rivers. There's camping available near Pigeon River. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle,  
it's good length for a morning trip.

Briefly about the general area:
Horn Rapids is a lovely place to have a look at while you're at Pigeon River. Grand Portage National Monument is one of the destinations close to Pigeon River that are pleasant to go to. Wauswaugoning Bay is close to Pigeon River and is a pleasant place to check out, and there are plenty of folks from Grand Portage here. This river is always fun. Places like Grand Portage State Park are magnificent to explore. Summertime brings highs in the 70's to Pigeon River. Summer night lows descend down to the 50's.
