Minnesota whitewater - Pigeon River, Cook County Cook county, Poplar Creek Road to Highway 61 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-III+     7 miles   This stretch of Pigeon River is 7 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-III+ section of whitewater. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. The wonderful Minnesota scenery and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these     hotels fill up quick. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's perfect for a one day trip. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are not so many other good places for that around here. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Poplar Creek Road to Highway 61 section is one of them. Briefly about the general area: For the period of the warm months, highs regularly are in the 70's at Pigeon River with overnight lows in the 50's. Highs throughout the winter are mostly in the 20's, and night lows in the 0's for Pigeon River. Taking a little journey to nearby Wauswaugoning Bay is a tremendous idea, and Grand Portage National Monument is a delightful local destination.   From a precipitation point of view Pigeon River is a reasonably common place; the month with most of the rain is September; February is the month with the least moisture.
