Minnesota whitewater - Pigeon River, Cook County Cook county, Poplar Creek Road to Highway 61 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-III+     7 miles   This stretch of Pigeon River is 7 miles long and is a class I-III+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Minnesota are often tougher than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Poplar Creek Road to Highway 61 section     is one of them. The scenic beauty of Cook County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with not too many other places for that. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. Briefly about the general area: For the period of the summer months highs here at Pigeon River reach the 70's. Once the sun is down it dips down to the 50's. Daytime highs during the wintertime are in the 20's, and during the dark hours in the winter at Pigeon River temperatures descend   to the 0's. From a rain point of view Pigeon River is a reasonably typical site; most of the rain falls through September, and February is the month with the least moisture. A visit to Pigeon River wouldn't be complete without taking a look at Horn Rapids, and Grand Portage National Monument is one of the destinations that are good to pop by close by.
