St. Louis
county,
Highway 53 to Highway 33 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-II 85 miles
Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Minnesota are harder than the national norm, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. The Highway 53 to Highway 33 stretch of St. Louis River in St. Louis County is 85 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. The natural beauty of Minnesota and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. The starting
point is not too far from Duluth, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are not so many other good spots for that around here. There aren’t any hotels right
nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear.
Briefly about the general area: You're sure to come across some good folks from Duluth here. During the long summer days highs here at St. Louis River get into the 70's, and through summer

At St. Louis River you don’t see much rain; the wettest month of the year is commonly June, that's the one that rains the most; February is when it's the driest.
