This stretch of Vermilion River in Dakota County is 0.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III+ section. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. No need to look hard for hotels, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The campgrounds here at Vermilion River are pretty good. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking     or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with not too many other places for that. The Falls to Old Mill in Hastings stretch is the only paddling stretch along Vermilion River. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Red Wing, as you can see on the road map further down. This stretch is very short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. Briefly about the general area: Summertime brings highs in the 80's to Vermilion River, and through the night it cools down to the 60's. Through the winter the highs are mostly in the 20's with winter lows in the 0's overnight here at Vermilion River.
