Missouri whitewater - Big Creek, Ozarks, Iron Wayne County
Iron Wayne
county,
Highway K west of Annapolis to Sam Baker State Park section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-II 19.2 miles
I kayaked the big creek May 5 at 3ft from Des Arc to Sam A. Baker take out at 143 bridge, it was an 11 mile float and very enjoible for Missouri waters. There were whitewater sections about every 1/4 mile and was all under class II, the rock gardens kept me on my toes but was not difficult at all. I would recomend trying this creek (river) to anyone seeking excitment and is not to experienced to try the St. Francis. Cheers! Says Mike McCafferty

is 19.2 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. The nature scenery of Missouri and the water flowing gracefully down Big Creek are reasons enough to come here and paddle. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter,
around here you'll find a large number of good spots. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. There are no other sections to paddle along Big Creek than the Highway K west of Annapolis to Sam Baker State Park section. If you're coming from Farmington it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The beautiful Ozarks scenery is an added bonus.
Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so pack your camp stove. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but
you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: McCue Hollow is right next door to Big Creek and is a brilliant spot, and Weeping Willow Spring is always fun to check out. And that's not everything you can do here in
the Ozarks. Summertime highs at Big Creek usually tend to be in the 90's; the night is fairly colder of course, regularly in the 60's. Daytime highs during the winter are in the 40's, and nighttime lows at Big Creek all through the wintertime frequently descend into the 10's.
All the water falling down from the sky makes Big Creek a wet location; March is when you get the most rain here, and the driest of the months is January.
