Missouri whitewater - Big Creek, Ozarks, Iron Wayne County
Iron Wayne
county,
Highway K west of Annapolis to Sam Baker State Park section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-II 19.2 miles
I kayaked the big creek May 5 at 3ft from Des Arc to Sam A. Baker take out at 143 bridge, it was an 11 mile float and very enjoible for Missouri waters. There were whitewater sections about every 1/4 mile and was all under class II, the rock gardens kept me on my toes but was not difficult at all. I would recomend trying this creek (river) to anyone seeking excitment and is not to experienced to try the St. Francis. Cheers! Says Mike McCafferty
The Highway K west of Annapolis to Sam Baker State Park section of Big Creek in Missouri is 19.2 miles
long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-II section of whitewater. The natural beauty of Missouri and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. The starting point is not too far from Farmington, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further
down the page. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. The wild scenery of the Ozarks is great. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling rivers. You might have to settle for a hotel a
bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Big Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Highway K west of Annapolis to Sam Baker State Park section is the only one. There are campgrounds quite near the
river where you can camp.
Briefly about the general area: Big Creek is right next door to McCue Hollow which is definitely worth visiting, and Weeping Willow Spring is an inspiring location to go to during your stay. And that's not everything there is to do here in the
Ozarks. All through the months of summer highs here at Big Creek get into the 90's; the nighttime is fairly chillier of course, usually in the 60's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 40's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Big Creek. Big Creek is a wet spot that gets lots of rain; March is the month that gets the most rain; January meanwhile is the driest month.
