The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Joplin, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This section of Shoal Creek in Newton County is 31.3 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I section. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Whitewater
rafting and kayaking spots in Missouri tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. The nature scenery
of Missouri and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. A stretch of this length does require some preparations, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear.
Briefly about the general area: Williams Spring is always fun to check out, and you'll probably meet some people from Joplin here. Summertime highs at Shoal Creek typically tend to be in the 90's. All through the dark hours of summer temperatures descend down into the 60's. Daytime highs all through the winter are in the 40's with winter
lows in the 20's overnight here at Shoal Creek. Shoal Creek is a wet place that gets a lot of rainfall; September is the month that gets the most rain, and January is the month with the least moisture.
There are a few sections of this river which are fun and fast, but for the most part this an easy stretch that is great for beginners or for the tired kayaker just wanting to be in nature but not exert themselves.
