Montana whitewater, Boulder River

Sweet Grass Park county, Fourmile to Speculator Creek section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III-V     4 miles
If you're coming from Bozeman it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The natural beauty of Sweet Grass / Park County and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This section of Boulder River is 4 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-V section of whitewater. There are so many stretches to paddle in
this river system, the Fourmile to Speculator Creek stretch is just one of many. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. There are campgrounds quite near
the river where you can camp. When you're paddling down a Absaroka Range river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll
find lots of paddling places. The average Montana whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so better not forget that many of the sections in this state are safe for beginners.

Briefly about the general area:
Natural Bridge State Park is both glorious and lovely, and it's in the vicinity of Boulder River; when you're here it's always fun to visit Custer National Forest. If you want a glorious time in the great outdoors just come on up to the Absaroka Range. During the summer at Boulder River temperatures are regularly in the 80's with overnight lows in the 50's.
