If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. The wonderful Jefferson County scenery and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. The starting point is not too far from Helena, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. There are no other sections to paddle along Boulder River than the Bison Creek to Jefferson River section. You might have
to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear.
And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This stretch of Boulder River in Jefferson County is 61 miles long and is a class II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people.
Briefly about the general area: The warmest time of the year at Boulder River arrives with high temperatures in the 80's. Summer nighttime lows plunge down to the 40's. The winter comes with highs in the 30's, and night lows through the winter for Boulder River tend to be in the 0's.
It is very dried out here at Boulder River usually; most of the rain falls throughout June while February is the month with the least amount of precipitation. Hay Canyon is a great site to visit in the vicinity of Boulder River, and on a pleasant day you can take a hike along the Upper Whitetail Park Trail.
