Montana whitewater, Judith River

Judith Basin county, Danvers Bridge to Anderson Bridge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-III     45 miles

A group of four canoes and eight people canoed this river in July of this year 2018. We put in where Danvers Bridge used to be! Prior flood diverted river channel so bridge was taken out. A mile or so downriver what had been a class 2 or 3 is now a 4 or 5 and unrunnable in canoes. We lined about a 100 yards to get by. The next day was challenging with fast current lots of rocks and hundreds of tight turns. The last third or fourth of the
river then became very dangerous with many fresh cottonwood sweepers once requiring a portage. Hopefully many of these new sweepers will be cleared out by coming high water. This spring there had been a multi year high water
event.

Other things of note, there was one electric fence across the river, poison ivy above the mean high water, some camping with cows, some great vistas. Would do it again but not until most sweepers are gone and would go lighter. We thought it would be more leisurely.

P.S. The Judith was running between 700 to 600cfs and gage hgt. of 5.8 to 5.7 Hope this helps. Says Terry Hileman

This section of Judith River is 45

miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. The natural beauty of Montana and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. There arenít any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well.
