The wonderful Montana scenery and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. If you're coming from Bozeman it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. The Madison Dam to Route 84 section of Madison River in Montana is 10 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-IV section of whitewater. If you hurry you can run this section
in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a pretty small number of paddling spots. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Getting a good workout and
just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Madison River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Madison Dam to Route 84 section is the only one.
Briefly about the general area: At Madison River you don’t see much rainfall; May is when you get the most rain here, and the driest of the months is February. During the summertime at Madison River temperatures are commonly in the 70's,
and through the night it cools down to the 40's. Throughout the winter highs are in the 30's; overnight lows all through the wintertime for Madison River tend to be in the 10's.
