Montana whitewater - Rock Creek, Absaroka Range, Carbon County
Carbon
county,
Lake Fork to Red Lodge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-IV 10 miles
This stretch of Rock Creek is 10 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-IV section. The natural beauty of Montana and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are less demanding. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling places. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby
campground. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The beauty of the Absaroka Range is a great plus for this river. The Lake Fork to Red Lodge
section is the only paddling section along Rock Creek. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more.
Briefly about the general area: So many cool things to do here in the Absaroka Range, too glorious to be true. There is a magnificent hiking trail in the vicinity of Rock Creek called the Custer National Forest Trail, and taking a little visit to nearby Towne Point is a great idea. This river is always
fun. At Rock Creek during the warm days of summer highs are in the 70's, and the nighttime is fairly colder of course, regularly in the 50's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 30's, and overnight lows in the 10's for Rock Creek. It is very dry here at Rock
Creek mostly; of all the months in a year May is the one with the most rain while February is generally the driest month. If you like skiing, you're in luck; Red Lodge Mountain is near Rock Creek, and you could always discover Woods Gulch.
