Montana whitewater - Tenderfoot Creek, Meagher County

Meagher county, South Fork Tenderfoot to Smith River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II     11 miles

I'm a land owner on the Tenderfoot and I wouldn't recomend trying to float it. It is a fun place to go tubing and have short floats but it isn't a good place for an extended trip. There are numerous log jams and gravel bars to navigate. On the other hand The Smith River is awesome. Says Lee Zehntner

If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The put-in is not too far from Great Falls, if you're not familiar
with the area there's a road map further down the page. This section of Tenderfoot Creek in Meagher County is 11 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II section. The South Fork Tenderfoot to Smith River section is the only paddling section along
Tenderfoot Creek. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. The natural beauty of Meagher County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. There's camping available near Tenderfoot Creek. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with not too many other rivers for that. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might
end up sleeping in your car.
