county,
South Fork Tenderfoot to Smith River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II 11 miles
I'm a land owner on the Tenderfoot and I wouldn't recomend trying to float it. It is a fun place to go tubing and have short floats but it isn't a good place for an extended trip. There are numerous log jams and gravel bars to navigate. On the other hand The Smith River is awesome. Says Lee Zehntner
The starting point is not too far from Great Falls, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The South Fork Tenderfoot to Smith River stretch of Tenderfoot Creek in Montana is 11 miles long and has been rated as a
class II section by American Whitewater. The nature scenery of Montana and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in
this state than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you won't find many other paddling rivers. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so why not pack your
sleeping bag too. There are no other stretches to paddle along Tenderfoot Creek than the South Fork Tenderfoot to Smith River stretch. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all
set.
