The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Keene, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful Cheshire/Sullivan County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Cold River have people coming here. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. This is an extremely short section so better bring some good walking shoes. There are campgrounds     quite near the river where you can camp. The Vilas Pool to Alstead section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so better not forget that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. Briefly about the general area: High temperatures at Cold River through the warm days of summer are in the 80's. Through the moonlight hours it's usually in the 50's. Highs during the wintertime are regularly in the 20's, and overnight lows during the winter for Cold River tend to be in the 0's. Cold River sees pretty   high levels of rain; throughout May this area sees the most rain while February is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
