If you're coming from Keene it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The wonderful Cheshire County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in New Hampshire are often tougher than in other states, so better not forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of
spots for that. This is a bit of a short stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. There aren’t any hotels right nearby
but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The Alstead to Drewsville section of Cold River in New Hampshire is 2 miles long and is a class II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well.
Briefly about the general area: All through the months of summer, highs frequently are in the 80's at Cold River.
Once the sun is down it sinks down to the 50's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 20's, and winter nights come with lows in the 0's to Cold River. Cold River is a quite wet place regularly with a great deal of rainfall; the month of May is the wettest with most of the rain, and February on the other hand is the driest. A cool spot to go to in close proximity to Cold River is Glovers Ledge.
