This section of Mad River is 7.8 miles long and it is classified as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in New Hampshire is often tougher than elsewhere, so don't forget that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. The starting location is a short drive from Laconia, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The beautiful scenery of Grafton County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. Getting some good exercise
and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. When you're paddling down a White Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's good length for a morning
trip. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Highway 49 Bridge to Campton stretch is one of them. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good rivers for that around here. There are many good hotels to choose from, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
Briefly about the general area: For the duration of the summertime months at Mad River temperatures are ordinarily in the 70's with night lows in
the 50's. All through the winter this place gets highs in the 20's, and overnight lows during the wintertime for Mad River tend to be in the 0's. From a precipitation point of view Mad River is a rather typical place; the month with most of the rain is August; February is when
it's the driest. Don't leave Mad River without first going for a hike along the Smarts Brook Trail, and you can never get enough of the brilliant skiing at Waterville Valley. If you go for the outdoors you'll go for it here in the White Mountains. There's delightful hiking along the Welch Mountain Trail, and Shell Cascade is always fun to check out. At this river you will always have a good time.
