If you're coming from Laconia it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The wonderful Grafton County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream have people coming here. This is an extremely short stretch so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. No shortage of good hotels, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. When you're paddling down a White Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too.
The Gorge stretch of Mad River in Grafton County is 1 miles long and it is classified as a class III section by American Whitewater. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Gorge section
is one of them. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers.
Briefly about the general area: There's good hiking along the Dickey Mountain Trail; the Welch Mountain Trail offers hiking at its best.
An average amount of precipitation falls at Mad River; through August this area sees the most rain; February is the month with the least moisture. All through the long summer days, highs usually are in the 70's at Mad River. Once the sun is down it dips down to the 50's. Highs
through the winter are regularly in the 20's, and winter nights come with lows in the 0's to Mad River. Be careful coming to the White Mountains, you might not ever want to go home again.
