This section of Mascoma River in Grafton County is 3.9 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III(IV) section. The average New Hampshire whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. No shortage of good hotels, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The starting point is not too far from Lebanon, please print out a copy of the road
map further down the page so you won’t get lost. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. The Mascoma Lake to Route 4 stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. The beautiful scenery of New Hampshire and the beautiful
way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This is a bit of a short stretch so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good rivers for that around here.
Briefly about the general area: Throughout the summertime, highs commonly are in the 70's at Mascoma River with nighttime lows in the 50's. The winter comes with highs in the 20's, and nighttime
lows at Mascoma River through the winter commonly plunge into the-10's. Mascoma River gets a typical amount of annual rainfall; the wettest month of the year is commonly August, that's the one that rains the most; February is the month with the least moisture. Whaleback has great slopes and a friendly staff.
