If you're coming from Laconia it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. The Thornton section of Smarts Brook in New Hampshire is 1.5 miles long and has been rated as a class V section by American Whitewater. The wonderful Grafton County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The beauty of the White Mountains is a great plus for this river. Smarts Brook doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Thornton stretch is the
only one. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in New Hampshire is often more difficult than elsewhere, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. The campgrounds
here at Smarts Brook are pretty good. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good places. This is a short paddling stretch so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over.
Briefly about the general area: For the duration of the summer highs here at Smarts Brook get into the 70's. Summer nighttime lows plunge down to the 50's.
The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 20's; after the sun is down through the wintertime temperatures at Smarts Brook plunge into the 0's. If the weather is magnificent here at Smarts Brook, you can go for a hike along the Smarts Brook Trail, and skiing at Waterville
Valley is one of those things you just must do. Smarts Brook gets a typical amount of rain; of all the months in a year August is the one with the most rain; February meanwhile is the driest month. Whohoo, so many exciting things in one place! The White Mountains rocks! On a delightful day at Smarts Brook you can take a hike along the Welch Mountain Trail.
