The natural beauty of Merrimack / Grafton County and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The put-in location is a short drive from Concord, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The wild scenery of the White Mountains is great. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors have
a lot of people coming here. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. The average New Hampshire whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do
keep in mind that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. There are no other stretches to paddle along Smith River than the Route 104 to Bristol stretch. The Route 104 to Bristol section of Smith River in Merrimack / Grafton County is 1.75 miles long and is a class IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. This is a pretty short section so better bring some good walking shoes.
Briefly about the general area: High temperatures at Smith River through the warm months are in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down
into the 50's. For the duration of the winter highs are generally in the 20's, and night lows in the 0's for Smith River. Smith River gets a normal amount of annual rain; the month of May is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest of the months is January. You can never get enough of the tremendous skiing at Ragged Mountain.
