The Lower Falls to Darby Field sign section of Swift River in New Hampshire is 5.35 miles long and is a class IV(V) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The scenic beauty of New Hampshire and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving.
This stretch has has enough mileage, you can easily run it on an afternoon. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you'll
find a large number of good rivers. If you're coming from Laconia it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Whitewater paddling here in the White Mountains is a great experience. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too.
Briefly about the general area: Hiking is a popular thing to do around Swift River; White Ledge Trail is a wonderful local
trail, and don't leave Swift River without first checking out Haystack. And if that's not enough there's lots more exciting stuff to do in the White Mountains. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Lucy Brook Trail; if you're addicted to cool geologic marks try Eagle Ledge.
Swift River gets a great deal of water; during the month of November you get the most snow around here while July is the month with the least amount of precipitation. High temperatures at Swift River throughout the warm months are in the 50's. All through the moonlight hours it's
generally in the 40's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 10's, and all through the dark hours in the winter at Swift River temperatures descend to the-10's. This is such a wonderful river. Skiing at Attitash Bear Peak is one of those things you just must do.
