  Whitewater rafting and kayaking in New Mexico is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that rivers here are less demanding. The Cedar Hill to Farmington City Park section of Animas River is 25 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. The beautiful scenery of New Mexico and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled
    as well. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. No
matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you won't find many other paddling rivers. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. If you're coming from Farmington it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down.

Briefly about the general area:
Visiting Aztec Ruins National Monument is just something you need to do if you haven't yet. High temperatures at Animas River all through the summertime are in the 80's while overnight lows are commonly in the 40's. The winter brings
 
highs down to the 30's, and night lows during the wintertime for Animas River tend to be in the 0's.
Around Animas River you don’t get a lot of rain; of all the months in a year August is the one with the most rain, and the driest month is June.
