This section of Animas River in New Mexico is 0.01 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II+ section. The scenic beauty of New Mexico and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. No need to look hard for hotels, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The campgrounds here at Animas River are pretty
good. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a pretty small number of paddling rivers. The put-in location is a short drive from Farmington, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This is
a very short stretch so better bring some good walking shoes. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. The Farmington Whitewater Park section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system.
Briefly about the general area: Animas River is a location that is reasonably dehydrated generally; the month of October is the wettest with most of the rain, and June is when it's the driest. At Animas River all through the long summer days highs are in the 90's with night lows in the 50's. For the
period of the winter the highs are frequently in the 40's, and after the sun is down during the winter temperatures at Animas River sink into the 10's. A wonderful location to visit close to Animas River is Mine Canyon, and Shannon Bluffs is an attention-grabbing place to take a look at while at Animas River. Here at Animas River there are plenty of folks from Farmington.
