Whitewater rafting and kayaking in New Mexico is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are less demanding. The starting point is not too far from Farmington, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The Farmington Whitewater Park stretch of Animas River in San Juan County is 0.01 miles long and has been rated as a class II+ section by American Whitewater. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of
people. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with not too many other rivers for that. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The nature scenery of
New Mexico and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This is an extremely short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over.
Briefly about the general area: During the summertime, highs ordinarily are in the 90's at Animas River. Summer night lows dip down to the 50's. For the duration of the winter highs are typically in the 40's; winter nights come with lows in the 10's to Animas River. The wonderful folks of Farmington like to hang out nearby. Around Animas River you don’t get a lot of precipitation;
all through October this area sees the most rain, and the driest month is June. If you're here at Animas River, checking out Shannon Bluffs is a must, and Mine Canyon is another fine location to have a look at close by.
