I have been a few times from Penny Lane to Westland Park, from about 500cfs to about 4000. That is also the extent of my whitewater experience. There are 4 areas of notable short rapids. The main/hardest rapids are at the water park in/by Berg park. I recommend looking at the comments on American Whitewater. The park has two features, the first feature has been easy to get through (and is the most used). The second feature has a hole in river |
middle/right. I tried to get through the hole in an IK at 1700 and 4000, but found I could only manage flipping. At 1700 a helmet is very advisable as the rock is fairly close (not to mention falling out may give you other
| scrapes and bumps). At 4000 after flipping I was stuck in the hole area for a bit, it did periodically let me get air, but kept me in a while before shooting me out. At 1700 the hole did not keep me in as long. I have since gathered that the hole can be avoided by going river left. Both features can be avoided at certain water levels (above 2200?) by going river left before the features, but don't go all the way to the sluice gate, before the | |
|
gate you turn back into the main stream. You might not want to turn too early or you might hit the second feature, although the second feature should be fine at river left. I have seen people tubing at 500-4000, but I do
not know if it is advisable above 2200. No tuber appeared to be trying the hole (and at higher levels you probably want to avoid the first feature just in case you end up going over the second feature). Around 600 and below
I have seen people swimming down both rapids, and the hole in the second feature appears negligible at this level as the water is mainly going through a channel on river left. Says Chris R
