The beautiful scenery of Grant County and the water flowing gracefully down Gila River beats anything. This stretch of Gila River in New Mexico is 18 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III+ section. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because
it is a very popular destination. There's camping available near Gila River. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Forest Road 809 to Redrock section is one of them. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with not too many
other spots for that. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your sleeping bag. When you're paddling down a San Francisco Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. If you're coming from Silver City it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down.

Mountains is uncomplicated. There are great locations to discover along the Mogollon Creek Trail. Don't leave Gila River without first paying a visit to Tub Spring; North Cherokee Canyon is a delightful place to spend some time. For the duration of the long summer days here
at Gila River, high temperatures frequently get into the 90's. When the night sets in temperatures plunge down into the 60's. For the period of the winter this place gets highs in the 50's, and night lows during the wintertime for Gila River tend to be in the 20's. Gila River is pretty dried up regularly; July is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest of the months is April.
