If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside New Mexico you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. The Forest Road 809 to Redrock stretch of Gila River in Grant County is 18 miles long and is a class II-III+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The scenic beauty of Grant County and the water flowing
gracefully down Gila River attract people from near and far. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking,
either way there are not so many other good rivers for that around here. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so pack your camp stove. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. The San Francisco Mountains scenery is wonderful. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Silver City, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page.
Briefly about the general area: On a great day at Gila River you can take a hike along the Mogollon Creek Trail, and the beauty
of mother nature reveals herself at Tub Spring. Yeah, come up here to the San Francisco Mountains for a brilliant time. North Cherokee Canyon is next to Gila River and is absolutely a pleasant place to explore. For the period of the warm days of summer at Gila River temperatures
are regularly in the 90's. When the night sets in temperatures descend down into the 60's. Throughout the wintertime highs are generally in the 50's with temperatures at Gila River dipping down into the 20's during winter nights. It is very arid here at Gila River ordinarily; the wettest month of the year is commonly July, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month of the year is April.
