Grant
county,
Visitor to Mogollan Creek section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III 39 miles
The starting location is a short drive from Silver City, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The nature scenery of Grant County and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in New Mexico tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, so it looks like you will be camping out. The beautiful San Francisco Mountains scenery
is an added bonus. The Visitor to Mogollan Creek stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Getting a good workout and just hanging out
with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you won't find many other paddling spots. This stretch of Gila River is 39 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime at Gila River arrives with high temperatures in the 90's. For the duration of the dark hours of summer temperatures
drop down into the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 50's, and winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Gila River. Since you're here at Gila River why not take a look at Miller Spring Canyon; there's pleasant hiking along the Granny Mountain Trail. Not much precipitation
falls here at Gila River; July is the wettest month with most rain; April is the month with the least moisture. This river is so good. But wait, there's more exciting things to do in the San Francisco Mountains. A trip to Miller Spring will fill your soul with good feelings, and don't leave Gila River without first going for a hike along the Miller Springs Trail.
