Grant
county,
Visitor to Mogollan Creek section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III 39 miles
The Visitor to Mogollan Creek section of Gila River in New Mexico is 39 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The wonderful New Mexico scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, so better bring your camping gear along. Getting some
good exercise and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. The San Francisco Mountains scenery is wonderful. The average New Mexico whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so if you're not
from around here don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a pretty small number of paddling rivers. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Silver City, as you can see on the road map further down. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Visitor to Mogollan Creek section is one of them.
Briefly about the general area: If you desire
a little side tour, try Miller Spring Canyon, and Gila River is right by the Miller Springs Trail. Summertime highs at Gila River mostly tend to be in the 90's while overnight lows are typically in the 60's. The winter comes with highs in the 50's with winter lows in the 20's overnight
here at Gila River. Gila River is typically a quite waterless place; July is the wettest month with most rain while April is generally the driest month. This is such a wonderful river. You'll in fact wish for more hours in a day to enjoy all the fun stuff in the San Francisco Mountains. A short visit to Miller Spring is always worthwhile, and do take a hike on the Granny Mountain Trail.
