The wonderful New Mexico scenery and the cool fresh water have people coming here. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The Visitor to Mogollan Creek stretch of Gila River is 39 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. A section
like this is is of course not run in a single day, so better bring your camping gear along. Whitewater paddling here in the San Francisco Mountains is a great experience. The put-in is not too far from Silver City, as you can see on the road map further down. Not too many hotels
nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with not too many other places for that.
Briefly about the general area: Be careful coming to the San Francisco Mountains, you might not ever want to go back home again. There is a good hiking trail in the neighborhood of Gila River called the Miller Springs
Trail, and close by you stumble on Miller Spring Canyon which is a tremendous location to pop by. Summertime brings highs in the 90's to Gila River. For the duration of the dark hours of summer temperatures descend down into the 60's. During the wintertime this place gets highs
in the 50's, and all through the dark hours in the winter at Gila River temperatures descend to the 20's. At this river you will never have a bad time. Going for a hike on the Granny Mountain Trail is always a magnificent adventure, and don't leave Gila River without first
paying a visit to Miller Spring. Gila River is pretty dry usually; July is the wettest month with most rain while April is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
