The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in New Mexico are often easier than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. The Cowles to Pecos section of Pecos River in New Mexico is 20 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-IV section of whitewater. The beautiful scenery of San Miguel County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. There are no other stretches to paddle along Pecos River than
| the Cowles to Pecos stretch. The beautiful San Juan Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at Pecos River ordinarily tend to be in the 80's while overnight lows are mostly in the 40's. For the period of the wintertime this place gets highs in the 30's; overnight lows in the 0's for Pecos River. Around Pecos River you don’t get a lot of rainfall; August is the wettest month with most rain while June is generally the driest month.
