New Mexico whitewater - Pecos River, Sangre De Cristo Mountains, San Miguel County
San Miguel
county,
Pecos to Tecolotito section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III 44 miles
Is this 44 mile stretch for public access at our own risk or do we have to go with a rafting company? I have my own inflatable kayak. Where are the drop-in and drop-out points? Says Henry
The natural beauty of San Miguel County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. The put-in is not
too far from Las Vegas, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're
all set. This section of Pecos River in San Miguel County is 44 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. The campgrounds here at Pecos River are pretty good. There are no other sections to paddle along Pecos River than the Pecos to Tecolotito section. The beauty of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains is a great plus for this river. Now this is a pretty long section, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear.
Briefly about the general area: Telephone Canyon is a perfect place to
spend some time at, and you'll almost certainly meet some folks from Las Vegas here. Around Pecos River you don’t get a lot of precipitation; August is when you get the most rain here, and the driest of the months is December. During the long summer days here at Pecos River, high
temperatures ordinarily reach the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures drop down into the 50's. Highs during the winter are ordinarily in the 40's; after the sun is down all through the winter temperatures at Pecos River sink into the 10's. So many entertaining things to do in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains, not sufficient time.
